welcome to the moss portal mural

The Moss Portal is the humble abode of my good friend Chantal. This year, they were made aware of an upcoming city project that involves demolishing their entire neighbourhood. The Moss Portal houses some of the coolest, kindest, free-spirited folks I’ve had the pleasure of meeting and so, needless to say, I was greatly devastated on their behalf.

Chantal reached out to me one day with a proposition… Since The Moss Portal is going to be demolished anyways, we might as well go crazy with it.

And so the planning began…

Above is a quick sketch visualizing the mural. Taking inspiration from the original illustration, I adjusted it so that it fits in the location. The colour scheme was both - inspired by the original piece and the paint that was available.

When I asked Chantal if there was anything she wanted in particular, they gave me prompts like “Old Growth”, “Community” and “Queer Liberation” to lead with.

These prompts reminded me of an illustrated piece I had done before, that I felt captured the essence and sentiment of love, growth and community perfectly. This, together with the snug location of the canvas made me believe that the Moss Portal would make a lovely home for my piece - “A Tender Moment in Time”.

When our conversation ends and the laughter subsides, silence fills the air but I don’t mind. I rest my head on your shoulder and you envelop me in a warm embrace, and we watch as the rising sun sets the sky ablaze. I find a universe in your arms and you find an eternity in mine, and for a second we are immortal in a tender moment in time.

The final result.
